Lower-gloss paint, flame surfacing and a few other details aside, the 4 Series coupe that BMW revealed on 14 June is a virtual dead-ringer for the concept car that preceded it in December of last year.
The Concept 4 Series Coupe went on to make its international debut in Detroit in January, where it was one of the few attractions that could dim the glow emanating from the Corvette Stingray’s display. Built to preview the coming 4 Series, the coupe echoed the aggressive sculpting that had taken hold in Bavaria since the 6 Series Gran Coupe sedan began sales in 2012.
There are some unfortunate sacrifices. As can be appreciated in the photo above, the changes are most evident on the nose, where the hexagonal headlight treatments found on the concept have been replaced with the familiar BMW circular elements. Milk-crate front intakes have been smoothed for production, too, with common round fog lights replacing three LEDs that, on the concept, resembled nothing less than diamonds in a ring setting.
Elsewhere, door handles that sat flush to the body now protrude outward, and a dorsal antenna now sits at the back of the roof. For all that, the 4 Series has stayed rather faithful to its show-stopping muse.
In the US, the coupe goes on sale late this summer, with a starting price of $41,425.
